Luton Community Watch Rises From the Ashes

In 2024, Luton’s residents faced an unexpected challenge when the National Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) banned all 5,000 local members from using the NHW brand and participating in events.

They instructed Luton Borough Council and Bedfordshire Police to cease engagement with Luton Neighbourhood Watch (LNW), demanded the shutdown of the LNW website, and published misleading and damaging claims in the press.

These draconian and unwarranted actions came after LNW lawfully shared the Bedfordshire Police and Crime Panel’s (PCP) decision upholding a complaint against the former Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC). The complaint related to false and malicious statements the PCC had posted on Facebook about LNW and one of its members. The publication of the PCP’s decision defend both National NHW and LNW’s reputation, contrary to claims at the time, it did not violate Charity Commission guidelines.

Now, Luton Community Watch is ready to step forward, continuing the commitment to supporting local communities as members have done for the past 40 years.

New street signs are now appearing across Luton, marking streets where new schemes are in operation or where former schemes have transitioned to Luton Community Watch.
