Biography
Kathryn Stone was appointed as His Majesty’s Inspector (HMI) at HMICFRS in March 2025. She joined the organisation following her roles as Chair of the Bar Standards Board and as a non-executive member of the Board of the Crown Prosecution Service.
Kathryn has dedicated her career to public service and advocacy. She spent 11 years as Chief Executive of the national charity Voice UK, supporting people with learning disabilities and other vulnerable people who have experienced crime and abuse, as well as their families. In recognition of her work, she was awarded an OBE in 2007 for services to people with learning disabilities.
In 2012, Kathryn was appointed Commissioner for Victims and Survivors for Northern Ireland. She also served as a commissioner for the (then) Independent Police Complaints Commission. In this role she oversaw investigations into police conduct, with responsibility for seven police forces in the Midlands and the North of England.
In 2016, Kathryn became the Legal Ombudsman for England and Wales. Two years later (2018), she was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws by the University of Derby in recognition of her contributions to public service. And in 2018, Kathryn was appointed Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, a role she held for a five-year term.
